Interview for a Mobile Phone Company

Write a reply of about 250 words to an email from your friend, who has a group interview for the post of ‘Part-time Promoter’ for a mobile phone company soon. Offer him/her some advice on preparation before the interview and things to do in the interview.

Dear Peter,

Thank you for your email of yesterday’s date. It is great that you are going to attend a group interview for the post of ‘Part-time Promotion’ for a mobile phone company. I believe the post will give you ample opportunity to learn about the workplace. It is therefore important for you to do well in the interview.

As a first step, you should find out more about the business of the company. It is not good enough to know that the company sells mobile phones. You should look up whatever information is available about the business: the types of phones sold, the price ranges of the phones sold, the target customers, and the network of shops. The more information you know about the company, the better. One good source of information is the website of the company, which is easily accessible. Another one is the company’s annual reports, which give an overview of the company’s business in a financial year. After you have collated the information, you should try to digest it so that you can make good use of the information when attending the group interview.

During the interview, you should listen to what other participants say and proactively take part in the discussions. A word of caution.  Please do not dominate the discussions as one of the purposes of the interview is to find out if a candidate is able to work with others as a team. In most cases, candidates who talk all the time will not be selected. At appropriate junctures, you should, by asking a question or making a point, steer the discussions towards an area yet to be explored. This will certainly impress the interviewers as you will convince them that you can make a difference in the discussions.

I hope you will find the above points useful. I also wish you good luck with the forthcoming interview.

Yours sincerely,

Ken
